13-Year-Old Trades iPod for Walkman, Hilarity Ensues
In what may be the coolest pop culture related social experiment ever, the BBC convinced a 13-year-old to swap his iPod for a Sony Walkman, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this week, for seven days. Brain Damage “Toxine (Live)”
Earlier this year I wrote an article about the persistence of the term "world music," and cited France's dub colossus Brain Damage as being one of the few artists capable of actually achieving a global sound without dumbing down their approach. Spoken Dub Manifesto, their last album, was an absolute triumph of dub poetry in several different languages mixed with diverse yet teeth rattling grooves.... Full Article

George Pettit, the harsh-voiced counterpoint in Alexisonfire's three-vocalist assault, is sipping a beer in the cosy back room of his new Hamilton home. He is genially recalling the dead body that surfaced while his band was shooting the video for "Young Cardinals," the first single from their new album Old Crows / Young Cardinals. ...Read More

Gordon Monahan
Since the late '70s, Gordon Monahan has been making a career of extracting the unheard from pretty much anything he can get his hands on. A seasoned composer and performer, he's worked with string instruments played by wind, Theremin-controlled water droplets (which "play" various amplified objects) and even with fake speakers.... A Buena Vista of Rocksteady
Jamaica's ska explosion and its golden age of reggae show no sign of losing their international appeal decades after their heyday, but sandwiched in the middle of these two much-chronicled phenomena is the short and sweet rocksteady era. Rocksteady: The Roots Of Reggae is a film and CD that... Read More
